The prize money for this contest is being donated by Tom Rankin
Tom has been a dedicated Standardbred owner and breeder for 25 years. From humble beginnings as a minority owner in a moderately successful race horse, Tom’s passion for harness racing has grown into a 40-horse stable of racehorses, nine broodmares and a few former racehorses that are now retired. He has also been involved in many charitable initiatives in the Ontario Harness Racing community.
Originally from Nova Scotia, Tom is a Civil Engineer by training and the founder and owner of a highly successful engineering and contracting firm, Rankin Construction. As the recipient of two honourary Doctorates for his tremendous hard work and generous community service, Tom knows how much benefit can come from fun, educational opportunities like literary contests. He hopes that kids throughout the province will be inspired by this year’s Youth Literary Derby to hone their writing skills and exercise their imaginations.
A dedicated father and grandfather, the 78-year-old Rankin and his wife, Beth, are currently enjoying their “retirement” at their 150-acre breeding and training operation in St. Catharines, Ontario. “We just had our first foal arrive and we’re really excited,” says Tom. “Any families who would like to stop by some weekend are very welcome at our farm.”
